Diotima is an Irish-based AI platform that helps professional educators and training organisations create formative assessments and give every learner individualised feedback, without the hours of manual work it normally takes. It was built by educators, researchers and AI specialists at Trinity College Dublin and the Learnovate Centre, and funded through a commercialisation fund via Enterprise Ireland. It is architected from the ground up for conformity with EU regulations, including the EU AI Act.
Diotima is built for professional education and training organisations, awarding bodies, professional membership bodies and others who assess and give feedback to adult learners. If your organisation runs courses, certifications or continuing professional development, and your assessors spend too long marking and writing feedback, Diotima is built for you.
Diotima was spun out of Trinity College Dublin, combining research from the School of Education and the School of Computer Science with the technology and design expertise of the Learnovate Centre. Funded by Enterprise Ireland under the Commercialisation Fund, the idea came from a familiar problem: our Chief Product Officer, a former educator, saw how much time quality feedback took, and how AI could ease that load without cutting corners on trust or quality.
Nothing Diotima generates reaches a learner without an assessor reviewing and approving it first. That's the core design commitment the platform is built around, and it's what makes Diotima different from tools where AI output goes straight to the learner. The platform is architected for EU AI Act Annex III compliance from the ground up, rather than compliance being added on after the fact.
Diotima helps an assessor do two things quickly: build formative assessments tailored to their learners, and give each learner individualised feedback. The assessor stays in control and reviews everything. Diotima does the heavy lifting of drafting and structuring, so a task that used to take up evenings and weekends takes a fraction of the time.
Formative assessment is checking how a learner is doing while they are still learning, so they can improve, rather than only testing them at the end to give a grade. It is the feedback that helps someone get better before the final exam or certification. Diotima focuses here because this is where good feedback makes the biggest difference to outcomes, and where assessors spend the most time.
Both. Assessors use Diotima to create assessments and manage feedback. Learners engage with the assessments directly, work through them with a degree of autonomy, and review their own answers before submitting. The assessor then sees each learner's progress and gives targeted feedback with the help of Diotima, completing the learning loop.
Diotima is currently a standalone platform with plans for integration.
No, Diotima is built for assessors and educators, not IT teams. If you can use everyday online tools, you can use Diotima. We provide dedicated support during onboarding to get your team started.
Diotima is architected for conformity with the EU AI Act. Because it's used for assessment, it falls under the Act's high-risk category for education — so rather than treating that as a hurdle, we built the architecture around it from day one: no AI-generated question, rubric or piece of feedback ever reaches a learner without an assessor reviewing and approving it first, every generated item is traceable back to the source material it came from, and the platform maintains a documented risk register with ongoing monitoring. We also align with GDPR in how learner and assessor data is handled.
Yes, learner data is never used to train AI models — that's a strict rule built into the platform. Learner data is hosted within the EU, and a Data Processing Agreement is available to every organisation, which we're happy to adapt to your specific requirements. Diotima is architected around GDPR from the ground up, and protecting learner data is treated as a core requirement, not an afterthought.
No, and it is not designed to. Diotima is built to support good teaching, not replace it. The assessor stays in control, reviews the assessments and gives the feedback. Diotima removes the repetitive manual work so educators can spend their time on the judgment and human connection that only they can provide.
